My name’s Sabian, With the help of the Think Big programme from O2, I’ve set up Why Do, a question and answer service run by young people. My aim is simple: to help adults understand young people a bit better.

This Blog will take ONE question from the official website: www.whydo.co.uk and answer the question more elaborately.

YOU can also ask questions directly at www.whydo.co.uk and have a panel of 100 young people answer them

You might have a question about the music we listen to, the clothes we wear, or how to talk to a young relative about the issues they face.

Yeah, we all thought Mark Zuckerberg was a one man army at some point.

The question many people ask is why is there such a great lack of female leaders? If there are, many why are they not given exposure to the world in order to inspire other women into action?

“A nation can rise no higher than it’s woman,” that is something I was brought up believing, and this does not extend to the workforce it extends to all fields of life and living, from birth right up to careers. James Brown sang the words,“this is a man’s world
But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl.”

I sometimes feel women do not realise their potential, they do not realise their power. The ability to create new life is a profound ability, that sets women on a pedestal higher than men in worth and value. The great men we see in society could not be great if it were not for a caring woman, whether that be a wife, a mother, or both.

So when I logged into the TED website and saw this video I thought it would be inspiring and encouraging for other women trying to get up the ladder.

If she can, you all can.

Businesses: Building Your Social Profile

This is an excerpt from my four-part ebook series, “SocialBiz - Something for Everyone”. The book looks at the four main social networking sites and helps everyone understand how they can be utilised for business purposes. Whether you have a large corporation, a small business or even considering starting a business, EVERYONE can learn a thing or two. The first short yet informative ebook - “TwitterForAll” comes out on 30th December

The key to success for any business, large or small, is understanding that social networking is NOT about selling your product or service.

“You’re crazy, That’s the whole point of my business!”>

Yes, the aim of your business is to make a profit, however, when you bring your business into the social networking world the ball game changes. Put it this way, your business in its rawest form is like a lion, going in for the kill and taking no names along the way, you sell your product/service - “cheers, mate! Have a nice day!” - but social media is a cunning animal, it is able to either build your reputation or destroy it. So you too, must become cunning. You must become what you are trying to conquer, social.

Social networking gives you a unique opportunity to connect with your customers on an almost intimate level, you are able to be in touch with them personally, you have the opportunity to make them feel that the world revolves around them every time you communicate with them.

It is all about conversation, there are millions of conversations going on around the world, your aim is to become a part of those conversations and introduce your product and service in a less direct way.

Customers are out there, they just want to have a conversation. The trick is being able to create a personality that they trust, to present a human face, instead of a business.

Think about how you feel after you have had a conversation with a truly engaging person, “let’s have a chat again sometime!”

A good conversation with potential customers will leave them feeling good and make them come back for more, which, in turn, increases your reputation and ensures that your business is able to keep attracting more customers and even keep your previous customers coming back.

Social Media sites allow you to monitor conversation, get involved in conversation and learn how consumers think without the need for a large-scale market research campaign. It was recently announced that twitter could be used to predict the outcomes of particular stock markets, is that not a wondrous development?

This is the power of social networking sites. It is all about communication, understanding and engagement.

Student Protests: Now What?

So, the government have voted to raise the tuition fees, let’s not act shocked, we already knew it was inevitable and all protests and lobbying were held in vain. I mean come on, let’s not kid ourselves, look how many thousands or people marched in protest against the Iraq war. We all know what happened then. In fact, all those who protested will know what the poor gentlemen who sit outside Parliament every day protesting about various causes feel like by now. X-factor, same thing…we HOPE they will make the sensible decision but, in the end, all it comes down to is profit. Sir Alan Sugar said it in the last episode of ‘The Apprentice’ – “You understand, all that matters is making a profit? Ticket sales and profit.”

This just begs the question: What now?

Many young people will feel like their world has been shattered, just seeing pictures of a mother with her baby walking a pram laden with the words ‘my mum won’t be able to pay my uni fees’, is a testament to how far the effects of this vote reaches. So what now?

Young people, need answers now, more than ever. No university for many, no jobs for any; it is double jeopardy. The only solution is alternatives – finding different routes to a degree (longer process, limited options), applying for scholarship in a university 9,000 miles away (fat chance) or creating their OWN jobs (now you’re talking!).

It is amazing how many ideas young people have but are unable to implement them, either due to lack of information, lack of confidence or both. This is where the guidance of adults comes in, adults who have enterprising thought and live in a world of progressive thought and put it into positive action. Now is the time of enterprise and entrepeneurism, why? Because this generation has resources at its disposal that previous generations did not have. Technology, ability to grasp and understand concepts at a quicker pace, unlimited access to information and the ability to reach out to any part of the world in the comfort of their homes.

Amazing right? Young people are all set then, hey? Well…

The only problem that stops young people taking advantage of these things is the restrictive culture in which they are born, the culture that dictates to them that in order to be successful, they must spend 16 years in school, 2-3 years in college and then a further 3 years in university. So how can they then be expected to show enterprising thought? Most times when I mention to a young person that they can start their own business they look at me as if I was fresh out of a mental institution. Mostly because it seems contrary to the system they are brought up in. Also, because they are afraid to step out of the comfort zones that the educational system conditions them into.

Being free of restrictions is every young person’s dream but very few actually go after it. Some young people have started their own businesses but they not not necessarily be sustainable, (fashion labels, music, party promotion, events planning), which means there is room for their minds to be truly stretched. I don’t think that the fee rise is the end of the road, maybe that is because I have not been in education since college, maybe it is because I was home-taught before that, but for me the bottom line is that this vote, as negative as it is, has also presented us with a silver-lining: Freedom from the system, an opportunity to explore a new world, a world that our minds were closed off to in the confines of the educational system.

Over time, the government will have to accept entrepeneurism as a career choice in its search for solutions, if any, because the enterprises and entrepeneurs will see the opportunities presented by this begin to take on young people and reinvent the way we think about employment.

How we move on from this is SOLELY up to us, not the government we can either choose to keep voicing our anger and discontent or we can channel that anger into solutions and develop something for ourselves.

Student Protests: Now What?

More Like Categorize Me

We see this all the time, but should are we being focussed on the wrong problem? (Click to enlarge)

Yeah, so you get the point. The country is getting fatter. Yeah. Great, off to the gym we go! Oh wait, but how can we do that when the government is planning to cut back sports in schools? Hm, curious. We’ll get to that another time. This time the focus is whether super-sizing children are the problem or if the name-calling and chronic categorization of young people is the problem.

Let me throw some random categorical facts at you:

In a classroom of 30 students there are 1 to 3 children with ADHD.

Just under one million 16 to 24 year olds were classified as Neet according to the figures, a rise of almost 100,000 on the same quarter the previous year.

HSE 2008 report shows that around three in ten boys and girls aged 2 to 15 were classed as either overweight or obese (31% and 29% respectively)

Then you have all kinds of unofficial categorizations that put a block on the minds of young people and adults. “Benefits scroungers”, while they do exist, and we see many of them n Jeremy Kyle, oh wait, the news told us that. Apparently all chavs are on benefits. I don’t like to stereotype or categorize but from when I searched for the definition of ‘categorize’ online and saw this:

Houston, we have a problem - Click to enlarge

I knew we had a problem. Categorization is a part of life, actually, scrap that - it is a part of our society - there, that’s better. It is the destabilising or debilitating obstacle that obstructs many of us from becoming what we can become. Battling through stereotypes and categorization is a tough job, even tougher is teaching young people not to give in to them.

Society is pretty much expert in destructive thinking, we do not build each other up, we bring each other down. Edward de Bono, one of the great thinkers in our time and creator of The Six Thinking Hats says of categorization, “it is possible to create tests to determine whether a person is type A or type B, or any similar descriptive discriminations. Psychologists do that all the time. The difficulty is that once people have been put into ‘boxes’ they tend to stay there.”

Categorization is destroying the future

This is evident in society, we tend to focus on what is rather than what can be. There was a statement made in the film X-men 2, where one mutant says to another, “people will never know beyond what they see with their own two eyes.” It is a fact, we judge based on the ‘first impression’, we make our deductions, add a bit of exaggerations (maybe) and put them into a category we feel suits them.

What alternatives are there? In order to become a forward thinking society, a more solution orientated society, we have to put away the destructive criticism and develop constructive criticism. You would cringe at the thought of knocking an elderly person down and leaving them to struggle to get back on their feet, yet, this is what we do to each other as a society.

Think about it, is the problem really obesity, or is the problem chronic categorization? The need to put a label on something in order for it to be accepted or recognised and throwing disdain at anything that has not been classified.

Try something here, take all the most successful pioneers in the world and classify them.

What can be…

What do you call Steve Jobs, this is a man who cannot quite be classified. He constantly pushes the boundaries of what we expect from him and leaves us on our toes. He doesn’t focus on what is he focuses on what can be and that which he creates based on this thinking is testament of that.

Young people have such promising minds that are being limited by the boxes they are put in. This means they are overcome by fear of branching out into new ventures, we have to stop treating young people like caged animals and start treating them more like birds and let them spread their wings and fly!

If you really want your child to be the best they can be you have to know the barriers they will face and help them to get over it. No child is born with the ability to jump over a hurdle, no bird pecks its way out of an egg and just starts flying, it is a learned skill and most young people in the UK and not being taught this skill. As a result they are worse off, that is when they are labelled “poverty-stricken” and “under-achievers”.

It all starts at home, young people are only as good as their surroundings. If young people are to change the adults, the parents, the policy makers must change.

After all, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, eh?

I encourage all those who want to find solutions to these problems in the UK to get in touch with me and let’s start thinking business, enterprise and what can be.

I’ve been occasionally blogging here for a short while but who I am and what I have achieved I have never really explained, even in the ‘About Me’ section of this blog.

So, I am going to take a few moments, so sit right there and I’ll tell you the story of who I am and what I have achieved.

My name is Sabian Muhammad. I am a 22 year old award-winning youth advocate, public speaker, presenter, social entrepeneur, Olympic Youth Panelist, school worker and soon-to-be author

That’s the easy explanation anyone can do that, but there is more.

I have worked with young people for the last 7 years, in schools, colleges and youth clubs around the country. My work, at first, was primarily with young people working as a stop-gap between adults in their schools and youth clubs helping them to understand each other. I have always been passionate about helping adults understand the young and find ways to communicate with them. I started in my local youth club at 15 years old helping out with organising activities for young people. I was there for 5 years as a volunteer before I moved on. In the years I was there I had a variety of jobs elsewhere including the role of play worker in a primary school.

But you don’t really need to know all this, you want to know where the light switch moment is, at what point did I begin to start making real waves, and that occurred on 10th July 2009 when I spoke in the House Of Lords.

This was the third time in history non-Lords were permitted to speak in the Chamber. The topic was ‘Education vs Talent: Is education responsible for developing talent?’ –I was the closing speaker for the event and opened my statement by saying: “The educational system is not designed to develop talent, the educational system is designed to ensure that society is kept running in future.” The rest, they say is HISTORY. See the video below for snippets of the speech.

Just prior to that speech I had been working as a Student Support Officer going around the UK delivering confidence building workshops to secondary school students. As part of my job I worked with many government organisations, such as Edexcel, Ofqual, Partnerships for Schools, Building Schools for Future and more.

After I spoke in the House of Lords, I was offered a work experience placement in Media Trust’s Creative Department, where I learned about the production and PR processes, as well as working on a consultation for an organisation called 11 million.

While working with Media Trust they asked me to put forward an idea for social change, that affects communities and young people. I came up with the idea to find a way ‘to bridge the generation gap’ – This idea was then given to O2 Think Big, an initiative part of mobile network supplier O2, helping young people around the UK make their ideas reality. My idea beat 50 other ideas and was created into a national campaign called ‘Why Do’ you can have a look at the website here http://www.whydo.co.uk

Homepage of www.whydo.co.uk

The idea came from my 7 years working with young people and adults, observing that the two did not understand each other and this at times negated the effectiveness of services delivered with young people in mind. So ‘Why Do?’ was developed on that basis. I worked with high ranking PR and Advertising agencies to make this campaign happen, it was not easy but it was fun.

The website was launched in October 2010 and has since gained over 80,000 hits, which makes it in my opinion a success.

On the basis of this campaign I have been contacted by the London Mayor Boris Johnson to sit on a Public Consultation panel on 30th November 2010 answering questions from members of the public about ‘creating opportunities for young Londoners’ – I do not mince my words here, I believe myself to be a specialist on understanding young people and I have helped many organisations achieve this through my advice.

As a sign of the campaign’s effectiveness the Why Do campaign idea also received an accolade for ‘Young Social Entrepeneurism’ awarded by Social Enterprise ‘Striding Out’. The Future 100 Awards profiles young entrepeneurs aged 18-35 who are demonstrating entrepeneurial flair and innovation in progressing a responsible business venture.

Sabian Muhammad with ‘Future100’ certificate

On the back of the ‘Why Do’ campaign I am writing a book called ‘Why Do for Parents’. I have been observing the questions parents and adults have been asking on the website and put them into categories which I then go into in detail.

I am writing this book, ideally to help reconnect adults to their children and what they may be going through. What parents and adults get out of the book is down to them remembering what it was like to be a child and putting themselves in the shoes of young people.

I will now be going into schools and delivering inspirational lectures, workshops and consultations with School Speakers, an organisation that hires out inspiring speakers to schools on, Enterprise and entrepeneurism, Harnessing gifts and talents, and motivational lectures. Have a look at my School Speakers profile here.

I also work with parents and children as a consultant, helping to put together the pieces in homes where parent and child do not get along, for what ever reason. The method is all in getting the two parties to see things from each others point of view.

Alongside all of this I am sitting on London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games youth panel, advising them alongside other young people, how they can make the games effective and engaging for young people.

Along the way, I have worked with and met various celebrities and influential people such as, Tim Campbell, Larry Lamb, Boris Johnson, Ken Livingstone, Sarah Brown, Tulisa Constostavlos, Alistair Darling, the Children’s Commissioner and more.

I have been invited to sit on many panels discussing education and youth opportunities. My aim is simple, to provide a better future for young people by not only educating young people but by also educating adults. I believe that the future cannot be, if those who are meant to provide it are not doing what is required of them. So, I specialise in finding social solutions and applying them.

So, that is who I am. I am always on the look out for new business opportunities and clients. So get in touch!

In today’s society we have a vast number of problems to face, the apparent breakdown of family and family values does not help the situation.

The Why Do Q&A website allows adults to ask young people why they do the things they do and after close observation, I noticed there is a huge gap, even a disconnection between parents and children. Things that should be basic for parents to understand have become complicated, clouded problems that further wedge the communications between adults and young people.

I have created this book, ideally to help reconnect adults to their children and what they may be going through. What you get out of this book is very much down to you remembering what it was like to be a child and putting yourself in the shoes of your child or if you do not have a child, in the shoes of the children you may make assumptions about everyday.

So, Why Do parents need a book like this?

On evidence of the questions adults are asking young people on the ‘Why Do?’ website, it would seem that many parents have the same problems dealing with, understanding or communicating with their children, from very young ages.

This doesn’t shine a good light on the depth of the generation gap and points to a possibly irreversible problem, and I believe if parents have a very short and simple resource they can refer to as a guide, they may have a better chance increasing relations with the young people in their lives.

Look out for the release of Part 1 soon!

So are the kids still not interested?

“The winter of discontent”, yes, that was it’s name in 1978-1979, a good 10 years before I was born. With widespread strikes by local authority trade unions who were trying to secure larger pay rises for their members brought the country to a standstill.

“Are we entering another ‘Winter of Discontent’?” is a question many have asked after the recent spate of trade union strikes.

Another winter of discontent? Not likely, the kind of power the trade unions had back in the 70s when the country was reliant on coal and mining caused more shock-waves, than we could see now. What we ARE seeing now though, is an all-out revolt from young people, under the guise of student protests.

Do not be fooled, the country is swiftly losing the confidence of its future generation.

Two weeks ago, we saw student protests turn ugly and the Tories’ HQ bore the brunt of the damage.

Yesterday, the students returned again with mass walk-outs from university and secondary school students around the UK, oh deary me!

This raises a question from me, in fact, from thousands of young people around the UK to adults - “Do you still think we are not interested in our future?”

Many adults on the Why Do website have asked, “why do so many young people not seem interested in their education?” and I answered that question in a previous blog which you can read here.

These protests have shown in destructive and passionate detail, exactly how young people feel about their education. The lengths they will go to secure their future, despite the boring lectures and unruliness they occasionally show, they love their education and know the benefits it holds.

Their apparent hate and disdain for education is down to the METHOD used by the educational system, not for the system itself. Young people love to learn, they love the empowerment that comes with learning something new but its delivery does not excite them.

But this lack of excitement should not be used as a reason to allow the university fees to rise. I know how much harder it will be for young people, who lack enough guidance from adults as it is, if they do not have a degree. I have worked for 7 years on nothing but a BTEC 1st Diploma in Electronics and know everything could have been so much easier for me if I had a degree.

The WhyDo campaign was created to help bridge the gap between adults and young people, if the politicians vote to accept this fee rise, the gap between adults and young people will extend even further. With millions of people unemployed in the UK already, what exactly does the government expect young people who cannot afford university to do?

What measures are in place for young people to prosper alternatively?

Pioneering thought and entrepeneurism are not taught ideologies in the UK or around the world, but the need for such subjects to be raised has never been more obvious.

Young people need more voice in politics, yes, many will argue that young people show no interest in politics, but when the policies directly affect them, as the university fee dispute shows, young people WILL respond.

The need for alternatives has never been more obvious, parents, teachers, youth workers and adults in general need to take a long hard look at themselves and consider the ramifications this will have on the future and the contents OF the future, will there even be a stable society waiting for the next generation?

These are the hard questions that need to be answered, and sorry, Big Society is NOT the answer.

WhyDo? Video responses

Hey guys,

I’ve been messing with my brand new iPhone and decided every evening I will do a WhyDo? Video response to one question from the website (www.whydo.co.uk) go to the site and ask a question and let me know on twitter: TheRealSabian and I’ll pick one question to respond to! Let’s get going!

First video will be up soon!

SabianM

Empowering Women...(not your usual feminist statement)

So, I’ve been travelling the UK visiting youth groups that have been short-listed for an awards ceremony I am working on delivering called the Young Partners’ Awards.

This week I went to Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester, it was the group in Manchester that caught me eye (sorry, the Mancunian accent rubbed off on me).

Called Pulling Together the youth group was primarily for Asian women, considering that they have many limiting factors on what they can and cannot do based on their religion, this is a welcome privilege for them.

I’ not going to lie, I was the only male in the room, so all eyes were on me, I’m pretty sure some of them may have been checking me out…tight pink t-shirt and all, I was convinced I shouldn’t really be here. But they welcomed me, bags of enthusiasm, confidence and excitement in the air.

We were there to find out what they have achieved, skills they have developed and some other unimportant questions.

What stood out for me was the fact that these young women had created things based on society’s view of them as women and of women in general and they had deliberately set out to dispel these forced views of women.

They showed me and PROVED they knew how to cook, knew how to do puppetry, had created films been visited by their local MP and been given support.

They had even given me bullet pointed reason as to why males are a distraction to their development.

Why am I writing about this?

I have always been of the belief that women and men should develop with their own sex up until a particular age, allowed to understand themselves, given room to develop without the distraction and attentions of the opposite sex.

I think this is important, and society agrees with me in the form of young mothers, absent fathers, young people killing young people, young people having sex at VERY young ages..and from the evidence of my 20 year old friend (who asked if having anal sex can get a girl pregnant) may not truly have a CLUE about sex.

The difference is telling, if females knew more about their body and what they are going through, have older females to confide in and learn from they would be in much better state than they are in now, where men freely take advantage of them and exploit them.

Nowadays, perhaps a lot of girls may feel that having a boyfriend or getting male attention makes them worthy or valuable.

It’s a sad case when I hear of these so-called “industry-hoes”, who sleep with various music artists for whatever reason, degrade themselves and allow their worth to be diminished before they have even begun to live.

What is worse, is young women slating other young women….cut it out! You aren’t making yourselves look good in the eyes of men either way!

Women need to have more value in themselves, after all a nation can rise no higher than it’s woman right?

So are women worth nothing if a male is not interested in them?

Why Should Adults bother to Validate Young Peoples' Existence?

Full Question:

“Why do you think people with more life experience than most of you should bother themselves with validating your existence? We’ve been there ‘n got the Tee-shirt, apart from a newer (and much poorer) vocabulary what could we possibly have to learn - other than the eternal arrogance of some young people is undiminished? One day you’ll be embarrassed by this.” #Via www.whydo.co.uk

Interesting question. For all the life experience adults undoubtedly have, why are young people in the state they are in? Because adults do not reach out to them, you do not share your life experience with us.

Validating existence, now this is very condescending, I was under the impression that the REASON we exist is because your generation BROUGHT us into existence. The very statement tells me you have no regard for the very beings you have brought on to this earth.

Yes, young people are arrogant, why?

They have had to live and survive by finding out and experimenting by themselves. Their parents are not there for them; they work 9-5/6/7 in the evening, are too tired to cook, too tired to spend time with their children, so yes, if that was how I was living I would be arrogant too, because I would feel a heightened sense of injustice, a heightened sense that I have got where I am WITHOUT the guidance of an adult.

Adults need to step back and take a look at themselves and ask themselves “have I provided my seed with the best future? Have we done a good job raising our children? Have we passed on any skills? At the end of the day these young people are IMITATING what they see adults do.

“Your children need your presence more than your presents” ~Jesse Jackson - Where are the adults in the lives of young people today?

“Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you” ~Robert Fulghum -This goes without saying.

So please, before you try to impose your superiority on this generation consider that for all your superiority, this generation is now worse off than other generations.

Finally, I do not think we will be embarrassed, at the end of the day I have come up with this idea as a young person trying to bridge the gap, when truly it should be the ADULTS doing this from our day of birth.

SO no, I would not be embarrassed over my attempts to reach out to your generation, perhaps with a little more open-mindedness you would notice that there is alot to learn from young people. The very owners of social networking concepts which we all use such as facebook and twitter were created by YOUNG PEOPLE.

I think you need to give more respect to young people, because it is attitudes like this that cause young people to be so rebellious.

Lost Love - A Poem I wrote after my last break up

I saw a beautiful dove fly from my hands into the hands of another,
fight back for it i wont even bother,
the sharp pain i was expecting is now only blunt
my aggression towards success, the dove will bear the brunt,
i’m moving onwards and upwards until i get to the front,
Now I lay “down”
But tomorrow I wake “up”
The dove made its choice
and i found my voice
but i still find it hard to rejoice
the dove was my inspiration
but in its rejection it became an instigation.
…..of a hot sensation that can
only be explained by a raging determination
the dove brought about my anger and revulsion
but forces me into positive compulsion
the dove was my light but in flying away left me in a terrible plight
in the anger of the darkness i found a light that is driving me like a boxer who lost the fight….

-END-

the pain of rejection should only bring about a sense of stubborn rebellion
that should force you and i to be better than what we were
having someone chosen over you does not mean you are inadequate it just means your time did not move in sync with theirs
the future is there for the taking there is NO mistaking that it will be painstaking
but if you force it it will NEVER work
live life to the full because…..once you feel the pain the only way forward is to channel your anger into something GREAT!
